About W.L. Weller

The story of Weller Special Reserve begins with William Larue Weller, a bourbon pioneer in the mid-1800s. Returning from service in the Mexican-American War, Weller took over his family’s distilling business in Kentucky. In 1849, he introduced the world’s first wheated bourbon, replacing rye with wheat for a gentler taste.

This innovation inspired many future brands, including the legendary Pappy Van Winkle, which shares Weller’s mash bill. To combat counterfeits during his time, Weller famously placed a green thumbprint on barrels and invoices to certify authenticity.
